People can be unforgiving. Ever have one of those mornings, or days when you’re constantly rubbing people the wrong way, albeit unintentionally? Even if you smile, say hello and try your best, you still irk them. Sometimes you can manage to press all their wrong buttons by just being you. Your presence is enough to set them off entirely. One minute it’s all good, but the second you make a mistake, they snap and you’re left like. Okay…Was it something I said?
Somebody wise once said that you can’t be everyone’s cup of tea. And hey, that’s okay! But you know what? You still have to love them anyway…
“…love your neighbor as well as you do yourself.” Luke 10:27b (MSG)
So we keep loving. And giving, and loving, and living. And loving. And…
It begins with YOU. Loving you.
The first part of the verse we know religiously; To love the Lord your God with all your heart, soul, strength and mind. The next part too, love your neighbour. But we often skim over the last bit…as you love,
For me personally, self-love has always been kinda like the elephant in the room. I mean, I’ve been quite fond of myself on occasion. I enjoy my own company, or perhaps it’s just the space? Being separated from other people. Sometimes I have been my own worst enemy, that much is true. I like myself, sometimes lol. But love? That seems a bit far-fetched when I’d think about it. Or not think about it. I’ve always loved loving other people. That has always seemed easier. But i am hardest on myself. I scold and scoff when I make mistakes. I join in the jeering when the world gangs up on me. But now I said enough.
I recently found myself stumbling upon this Zulu gem;
Zazi, Zithande, Zithembe.
Know yourself, Love yourself, Trust Yourself.
The word of the day being, yes you guessed it. Zithande. A Star for you 😀
Although, the three are intermingled. To love oneself, one must know oneself, and thereafter trust oneself. And So I set out on this pilgrimage of self discovery and self love~ry.
But how does one know themselves? By knowing God. As the Bible says we were created in His image, and He knew us before we were formed, and in Him we live, and move and have our being… ❤
And we love ourselves by loving Him. 1 john 4 has some useful nuggets on this:
7 Beloved, let us love one another: for love is of God; and every one that loveth is born of God, and knoweth God.
8 He that loveth not knoweth not God; for God is love.
11 Beloved, if God so loved us, we ought also to love one another.
(Actually go and read the whole chapter because it is GOLD).
I realised that in order to fully love my neighbour, I have to fully love myself. If I can be more accepting of my own mistakes, I can forgive my brother’s. If i can give myself room to grow, I can give the same grace to others. And even on those moody days, when nobody cares or everyone hates you? At least you still have you.
Be you, love you. All ways, Always. – Alex Elle
